Screwpile lighthouses in the Chesapeake Bay

Most of the lighthouses found in the Chesapeake Bay are screwpile, similar to the picture, receiving their names because the pilings, or the support structures, are screwed deep into the muddy base of the bay. The bay is wide, with many shallow areas prohibitting safe passage, so these screwpile lighthouses are placed in the water as part of the aides to navigation system.
