Welcome to the most vibrant indigenous culture in Latin America, the Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands. The San Blas Islands are off the Caribbean coast of Panama and are part of the Comarca de Kuna Yala, the semi-autonomous homeland of the Kuna people. The Panamanian government recognizes this politically organized group and incorporates Kuna representatives into the legislature.
Each community island is ruled by a chief. All visitors are requested to visit the chief first, and ask his permission (i.e.; pay him money) to visit his island.
